Why Nearby Planetary Systems Could Mistake Earth for a Supernova

Yes, I think that it just might happen. You might be asking yourselves how it could be possible that the inhabitants of any planetary system nearby (relatively speaking) could ever mistake our planet for a supernova.

A supernova is a stellar explosion which can occur at the end of a star’s life if triggered by certain circumstances A supernova is an extremely luminous event, causing a burst of radiation that can briefly outshine an entire galaxy. During this short interval, a supernova can radiate as much energy as our own Sun might emit over its entire life.

What could cause someone to confuse our tiny planet with an event of such magnitude? I think the mistaken identity could occur when statements like this are made:

“In very simplistic terms, the ultimate issue and question is who do we trust or put our security in, God or government? Some may ask what does God have to do with our health care system. For one, He’s created the government as an institution in society to do certain things. When we reject His design for government, in a sense, we’re rejecting Him. And second, who do we look to for our ultimate security in life, to provide for us, God or the government. Here Jesus’ words come to mind about not worrying and trusting God to meet our basic needs. Or if we believe it all depends on us, we’ll look to government.”
Tom Prichard, President, Minnesota Family Council

Yes, sometimes the stupid burns that brightly. Supernova Stupid.

  1. Shorter Tom Prichard: Jesus founded the US so he could govern us appropriately, and if we defy him, say by electing a brown man president, then we’re all going to die and burn in hell.

  2. So why not a two-tiered plan for health care? The fundie teabagger deather nitwits can pray away their diseases, and everyone else can pay into a single payer health care system and, you know, survive.

  3. Holy shit Jason, how very un-Canuckistanian of you…We’ll make a real ‘Merican out of you yet…

  4. I’m all for giving the evangelicals/fundamentalists/whatever-the-fuck-they-want-to-call-themselves the perfect opportunity to do things “god’s way”. We’ll give them a nice plot of land in Montana, all the tools and technology that one would expect from the 1st century CE, and leave them alone for a few years.
