There's another reason not to use embed: Firefox has a bug that causes the embedded object to show even in overflow clipped areas, that is, it is still visible in a non-viewable part of an overflowed element. Thanks for the tip!

I totally agree with you that the problem doesn’t normally occur with standard proxy servers.

We had this on a huge site we own the funny thing is that the ip was from Iran after looking at the logs we found that in actuality what the "bot" was doing was harvesting emails. This is one of those deals where it is what it is every time we make changes they seem to be one step ahead it is just fustrating and never ending.

Why was the embed tag deprecated? Personally, i try to make things compliant for the purposes of page design (ie easier to bug check) but i dont get too held up on making sure its compliant 100%. I always go for transitional xhtml and just make sure its consistent cross-browser. The codes needed to publish swfs are now more complicated (but still qute easy!) with these changes, so i assume there was a good reason for taking embed from xhtml.
I do respect you for targeting 100% compliance, but i just dont find it realistic on the sites that i work on, with 3rd party editors, etc...

Hi Carlos. You're correct in that the problem doesn't normally occur with standard proxy servers. It's possible, however, to set up a site with an automatic proxy system so that what appears to be a static page on the site (or generated PHP) actually draws its content from another site by proxy. This can also happen if someone publishes a link to your site on a page, but the link itself is actually a directive to a proxy server which grabs your page content and delivers it to the search bot.
Basically, I could set up a page on my site called carlos.php which actually grabs the content of http://carlos-osorio.com/ to display. For the second scenario, I could set up a proxy server and link to it like http://proxy.dexterityunlimited.com/carlos-osorio.com/index.php in which case the content would be from index.php on your site, but the search engine would index it as being on my site. Either way, it could lead to problems with the search engines and page rank.

I didn't think that what (bingo guy) was saying could be possible, the link would have to be fixed or anchored to the proxy url and as most are on cgi or similar links would soon disappear thus preventing the crawlers seeing such links.
