Dexterity Unlimited is based in Champaign/Urbana, Illinois, the birthplace of Mosaic, the first graphical web browser.
Dexterity Unlimited takes its name from the unofficial name of the Purdue University Juggling Club, of which Dan Johnson was a member, and which was founded by his roommates at the time, David Ward and Jerry Kalke.
Dan started his long association with computers in 1978, learning rudimentary programming with BASIC. Studying PASCAL and FORTRAN programming at Purdue University in the early 1980's gave him a grasp of the fundamentals of computers and data structure.
Constructing simple web pages in 1995 began a long fascination with the web and its possibilities, which continues today.
Dan's earliest web creations took the form, as many did at that time, of table-based layouts. Being a part of Microsoft's Developer Network led to attendance at several of Microsoft's workshops, giving inspiration for future development.
Having become frustrated with cross-browser compatibility issues, IIS web server administration, and seventy-hour work weeks, Dan left the web design industry for several years.
Discovering web standards, and the promise of development that need not be fraught with such frustration, Dan returned to the back-end of the web.
Meeting several like-minded individuals on a variety of web forums helped to broaden Dan's knowledge of web standards and their application in today's world of development.
Today, Dan continues to create web sites with current web standards in mind. The techniques he applies lead to designs that are user-friendly, accessible, and semantically structured.
