Yay! More cover songs!

Yes, still more cover songs. Every band out there probably comes to the decision that they too can do a good version of one of their favorite songs. Some of them are right, and some of them are dreadfully wrong.

First up is one that I enjoy for a couple of reasons. On reason is that I like Hyde, the lead singer of Japanese band L’arc~en~Ciel. The other reason is Hyde’s pronunciation in this video. This was on a Japanese television show several years ago, and Hyde’s English pronunciation was not yet very good at all. The enunciation (or lack thereof) of the lyrics in this song add some kind of strangeness that I like. The sax player rocks too! Here is Hyde performing Careless Whisper.

Just for the hell of it, here’s yet another version of Careless Whisper, this time by South African band Seether. They’ve been described as a post-grunge band (whatever the hell that is).

I’ll probably get called a blasphemer for even suggesting this one, but I do enjoy it. Leningrad Cowboys are a Finnish band famous for their humorous songs, ludicrous hairstyles, and all-around great time they have performing. Here they are performing Stairway to Heaven during a live performance in 1993. Gotta love the Alexandrov Ensemble, the official army choir of the Russian armed forces, performing back-up!

Remembering DuWayne’s like for Leonard Cohen, I couldn’t leave out Sirenia’s version of First We Take Manhattan.

  1. What was that sign in Wayne’s World? Oh right, “NO STAIRWAY”.

Seriously, though, that wasn’t as bad as I was expecting given the hair. And the accent.

Sirena’s a bit heavier than I usually go for but still pretty cool. And I agree that Careless Whisper is covered way more than it deserves, but Seether’s cover’s great. And “back in my day”, we’d call them rock. Fuck this “post grunge” shit.

Damn it all, I should be in bed, not posting on blogs!

  2. Leningrad Cowboys released an album called Zombies Paradies in 2006. It had a bit of a harder sound than most of their previous stuff. Here’s a track from that album (no actual video though) that I’ve played for a lot of people. They often don’t recognize it at first, but the look on their faces when they realize what the song is—priceless.

(Hell, I can’t even get my own comments to show an embedded video!)
